5 Things you didn't know about 8th Avenue Brooklyn
1. 8th Avenue was an enclave for Norwegians until the 1980s. The Avenue's nickname was Lapskaus Boulevard, Lapskaus being a native Norwegian dish.
2. 8th Avenue hosted the 17th of May Norwegian Independence day parade until the 1970s.
3. The John Travolta Dance scene from Saturday Night Fever was filmed at the Oddesy Club, 64th Street on 8th Avenue. The disco ball from above the dance floor still hangs in The Soccer Tavern.
4. Serial Killer Son of Sam purchased his gun in Rutuelo Gun Shop on 56th Street and 8th Avenue. After he was arrested, Mrs. Rutuelo in an interview with NYTimes recalled him as being "a real nice fellow".
5. In 1985 the first Cantonese restaurant was opened between 55 and 56th Street on 8th Avenue. It was named Canton House Restaurant.

8th Avenue was formerly the Main Street of "Little Norway" and was called Lapskaus Boulevard.
